- We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness;
- that Governments are instituted among Men to secure these rights, and that the just power of governments is derived from the consent of the governed;
- that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of such ends, it is the right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, framing their Government on such principles, and organising their Power in such manner, as to them shall seem most expedient to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, of course, will not alter long-established Governments for petty and transitory reasons; and all experience shows that people would rather endure a calamity while it is endurable than to make improvements by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long succession of offences and abuses of power, invariably for the same purpose, manifest an intention to subject the people to absolute Despotism, then the people have a right and even a duty to overthrow such a government and to set up new Guardians of their future.
